Put A Ring On It Redux

So the cat's out of the bag.  The real reason Tim's videos are so good is because his hot blond assistant keeps us focused on the task at hand.  In this fine video, Tim shows us the virtues of tippet rings with the help of his assistant who knows the importance of being seen but not heard; if you watch carefully though, you will see her roll her eyes at some of Tim's comments.  Clearly, she doesn't fish.

Sharpen your hooks.

just glue that ring to the tippet!!!!!

You can't do that! As fly fisherman and tiers, we need to stay slaves to 1800's materials, techniques and technologies.

Haha, not a slave to materials, but a slave to the CRAFT of fly tying, not fly making. I would rather buy them.

And just who decides whether it is CRAFT or fly making, is there an organization, an individual, a document of some kind? Where is that line- varnish? head cement? Sally Hansens? UV cure? My guess is, if Carrie Stevens had access to UV cure resin she would have ditched the shellac in a New York minute. Should I toss my Whiting necks in favor of those nasty old Indian necks I learned to tie with just for the sake of CRAFT? Please Anonymous, enlighten me.

I guess you decide. After all you know what Carrie Stevens would have done. I will stick to tying, you can glue. Now take your light hearted ribbing and move along. I love your videos btw. Thanks for doing them.

Anonymous II - I don't think Carrie Stevens would have used UV cure resin on her flies....she was allergic to UV rays and that's why she stayed inside and tied flies all day honing her skills. I do think she would have used Hard as Nails, after all, she did go out and party after the sun went down and it's well known that she wanted her nails to look as good as her streamer heads. :)

That's the same reason I don't use that stuff or head cement - I'm "allergic" to it. : )

So, because of said allergy, you finish the heads of classic Atlantic salmon flies with just wraps of tying thread (6/0 Danville of course). Interesting. Actually, I just went back and looked at the "Same Thing Murray" tying video and you DID use just thread wraps. Kinda kills my whole argument. Once again, moving along...

Thanks for this video, you just improved my the quality of my days on the stream. In my 70's and anything that simplifies my fly fishing is a hugh bonus.

Ya' know, I've been thinking, you draw the line at gluing a parachute to a post.

it is after all called fly tying, right? Now, move along.;)

Interesting comments. To each his own......for the record I use head cement when tying salmon flies for others or for framing, and also on the quill of the red quill to draw out the richness of it.

Moving on....Matt
